How A Chiropractor Can Help Alleviate Hip Pain Naturally

By Troy Leonard Hammerstrom

Suffering from hip pain can be very disruptive to a person's life. Although it varies from mild to severe, it can limit one's movements and activities and interfere with sleep. Normally there is a condition present that causes this type of discomfort, which if healed, should put an end to it. Patients undergoing therapy from a chiropractor can experience safe, natural healing and relief of pain in the hips which does not require taking medications.

Discomfort felt in this large joint which connects the femur to the pelvis may be due to various disorders. Cartilage in the joint can wear out, an injury or other condition may cause inflammation, or it may be the result of pain originating somewhere other than the hip which is experienced as referred pain. A chiropractor's first priority is to determine the source of the discomfort, instead of merely addressing the symptoms.

A misalignment in the sacroiliac joints which are found in the lower back, is another common reason for hip discomfort. These sensitive joints are especially prone to strain and stress exerted on them by some types of movement, and often from pregnancy and childbirth which often results in expansion and misalignment of these structures.

The first step in treating this problem will be to reduce swelling, and next to restore normal mobility to the joint. The chiropractic practitioner will be able to determine what the underlying condition is by thoroughly examining the patient and taking a detailed health history from him or her. There may be the need for x-rays or other diagnostic tests as well. Once this issue has been identified, the best course of therapy will be recommended.

Usually the most effective approach involves a combination of therapeutic techniques and possibly some lifestyle changes to lessen the chance of a recurrence. These healthcare professionals do not prescribe medications or recommend surgery as traditional doctors do, in fact these methods are believed to ignore the root cause of the pain and prolong healing as they merely address the symptoms. Timely treatment can help prevent long-term damage to the affected joints.

Chiropractic adjustments may be used to help correct any misalignment responsible for the condition. Massage and the application of ice to relieve swelling are also effective for promoting healing. A series of stretching or passive range of motion exercises may also help normal movement be restored and reduce the likelihood of a recurrence. These can be done daily at home, once the patient is shown how to perform them.

The patient may also be given a nutritional supplement by the chiropractor that can promote healing. Fish oil capsules are particularly helpful in this situation, as they are an excellent anti-inflammatory agent and help promote healthy nerve tissues.

The chiropractor will usually develop a personalized therapy plan for the patient with hip pain that will encourage moderate movement but not in excess as to exacerbate the condition. With the right balance of nutrition, exercise, and physiotherapy many patients will begin to feel substantially less discomfort in a short time, depending on the severity of the disorder.
