Areas To Consider When Looking For A Highly Reputable Personal Trainer Mountain View

By Michael Petry

Mountain View is one of the major cities in the Silicon Valley, California. The city is known for the large presence of a number of the biggest companies all over the United States. These companies have greatly helped in boosting up the economic status of Mountain View, thus, people here can certainly afford to hire even the most expensive fitness trainers in the world.

When searching for a highly reputable personal trainer Mountain View, keep in mind that there are actually a lot of other important things that you should think of besides knowing his certifications, affiliations, educational attainment and expertise.

Choose A Trainer Who Understands Your Fitness Goals

It isn't enough that a trainer is highly certified and well-skilled in his profession. He should be able to understand and relate to your fitness goals as well. A fitness program may be effective for others but it might not turn out effective for you. So the best thing that the trainer is able to do is to devise a program that's catered to your lifestyle and needs. Therefore, when looking for a personal trainer Mountain View to hire, choose someone who will be willing to listen to your concerns and will understand the fitness goals that you're trying to achieve.

Find Out If The Trainer Behaves Professionally

It is certainly not good to work out with a fitness trainer who does not know how to behave professionally. No matter how good he is on his profession, but if he does not know how to treat clients well, then he is still not an effective trainer.

It can be frustrating to train with someone who will not even consider your feelings and will just force you to do something which you are not even comfortable with at all. So when looking for a personal trainer Mountain View, choose someone who has a friendly personality and not someone who is arrogant.

Find Out If The Trainer Behaves Professionally

Some of the highly certified trainers seem to act like they know everything and will not even listen to what their clients would say. Well avoid those kinds of trainers because they should actually be the ones who will listen to what their clients need.

It can be frustrating to train with someone who will not even consider your feelings and will just force you to do something which you are not even comfortable with at all. So when looking for a personal trainer Mountain View, choose someone who has a friendly personality and not someone who is arrogant.

So these are some of the things that men and women would sometimes neglect to take into consideration when searching for the very best personal trainer Mountain View. Just because a trainer has all the certifications and licenses in the world doesn't mean that he is already the best. Aside from his professional achievements, it's his personality that actually matters the most.

A Personal Trainer Cupertino Lists Down 4 Outdoor Activities To Help You Stay Fit

By Patricia Neill

Cupertino is a small town within the Santa Clara County in California. It's situated on the western edge of the Santa Clara Valley and some parts of the town have extended towards the foothills of the mountains in Santa Cruz.

Because of this, people in Cupertino are fond of outdoor activities, like trekking, hiking and mountain climbing and in fact, the towns are surrounded with bike lanes and bicycle traffic is typically heavy. So here's a list of 4 outdoor activities that can help you to stay fit, as shared by a personal trainer Cupertino.

* Swimming

If you have a pool in your house outdoors, then swimming is the perfect outdoor exercise for you. If you don't have a pool, then you can check out some of the hotels and resorts in Cupertino and see if they have a pool where you can swim.

The personal trainer Cupertino says that hiking can help you to burn as much as 700 calories, although this will also depend on your pace and on how much weight you have. Ask your kids or other family members to join you for a more enjoyable hike. But don't forget to bring bottled water to keep you hydrated.

Vision Monday Columns A Bit of Nostalgia

My first job as a columnist was for Vision Monday, a bi-weekly newspaper published (now) by the Jobson Group. As I recall, I joined VM upon when it first started, in September 1988. I intend to put some of the columns I wrote online, as I’m sure that Jobson does not have an archive going back to this time. This first online column, published either in February or March of 1989, relates my memories of the pioneers of the contact lens industry, and how I got my start in consulting, first in contact lenses, and then in the rest of ophthalmology.

A BIT OF NOSTALGIA
IRVING J. ARONS

Vision Monday,
March 1989

I recently saw a picture of Solon Braff, the founder of Calcon Labs, as he attended last Fall's International Society of Contact Lens Specialists biennial meeting (1988), and it brought back a flood of memories about my early days in consulting in the contact lens business.

Sol's Calcon Labs in Hollywood, CA was one of the first I toured along with the Soft Lenses operation in San Diego in 1976. That got me thinking about how I first got involved and of some of the entrepreneurs I have met along the way. The times certainly have changed. The contact lens industry has matured and few entrepreneurs remain in the business. Most companies today -- especially the larger ones -- are run by professional business people, most of whom have had little previous contact lens industry experience, as did their predecessors. But, ce est la vie, that’s the way it is, as we reach the 18th anniversary of the soft lens in the United States.

It all began for me when I joined Arthur D. Little in 1969. One of my first assignments was to try and find other uses besides contact lenses for HEMA, the polymer used in the first soft lenses. We had been retained by National Patent to find out what else could be done with this intriguing material that they had "discovered" in Czechoslovakia in the early 1960s. We didn't find much of value, but I began to keep files on this fascinating material that turned from hard plastic to soft with the addition of a small amount of water.

In early 1972, Joe Nemeth of Nemeth Contact Lens Lab in Boston, associated with the noted Boston ophthalmologist, Dr. Perry Rosenthal, visited ADL to see if he could use our laser to "fenestrate" (put holes in) contact lenses to increase their oxygen permeability. As one of the young plastic chemists on the staff, I was asked to meet with Joe, and then later with his associate, Dr. Rosenthal. Perry told me all about this new soft contact lens that he was working with, and how he wanted us to develop a new material that he could use to make contact lenses. I guess our development proposal was too costly; he eventually took the idea to the Univ. of Lowell, outside of Boston, started Polymer Technology and developed the Boston Lens.

In May 1972, I got a call from the underwriters working with National Patent on a proposed public offering. That began my longtime relationship with Jerry Feldman and Martin Pollak, the founders of National Patent. They hired ADL to conduct a worldwide inquiry into the safety of the then just released Bausch & Lomb Soflens, since nearly all their revenues were from royalties received from B&L. As part of that assignment, our ADL team interviewed all of the original clinical investigators of the B&L Soflens and I attended the Senate Select Hearings on Soft Lenses in July, 1972. I had the privilege of meeting and sitting next to Jim Dodd, then President of B&L's Soft Lens Division, and listening to Neal Bailey's testimony on the safety of the soft lens. After the meeting, I shared a taxi back to the airport with Bob Spriggs, the president of Automated Optics. Bob told me he was going to have the next soft lens approved and he was right. He had licensed the Seiderman physiological polymer (PhP) material to Don Brucker of Continous Curve, who's Soft Lenses' Hydrocurve Lens was the next cosmetic lens to win FDA approval in 1974.

As a result of that first assignment in 1972, I wrote and ADL published one of the first market research reports on the soft lens industry in 1973, and as they say, my career in the contact lens industry was established. Along the way I have met and interviewed many of the original industry pioneers, most of whom were introduced to me by my mentor, Neal Bailey, the original editor of Contact Lens Forum and now Contact Lens Spectrum. I would attend the CLMA and Optifair meetings and walk the exhibit halls with Neal who would introduce me to everyone who was someone in the industry.

Some of the more colorful pioneers have included Don Brucker of Continous Curve, who told me he couldn't talk to me because his company was in SEC registration (for a public offering) and then proceeded to spend a couple of hours telling me all about his hard and soft lens businesses. I had a similar experience with Orrin Stine, president of Wesley-Jessen, who told me in about two hours how he never gave interviews. Others included Stanley Gordon, president of UCO Optics, and his stories of the early days of the hard lens business; Fred Danker of Danker Labs and his compression molding lab on Long Island; and Alan Isen of Griffin Labs, who had sold his lens material to Warner Lambert (and its American Optical Division), and spent four hours in one of our conference rooms lecturing to me about the benefits of his Softcon material.

And there was Don Korb. Don and Miguel Refojo of the Retina Institute founded Corneal Sciences in Boston, and developed the CSI lens. They eventually sold CSI to Syntex and it now resides with Pilkington's Barnes-Hind. Don had fit one of the secretaries at ADL with his ultrathin CSI extended wear lens and when he found out where she worked, insisted that she not tell me anything about the lens. Of course I eventually found out about it and Don later became a friend and provided much insight into extended wear.

Of course I have to include Jerry Feldman and Martin Pollak in this group of entrepreneurs. They above all others were responsible, first, for the soft lens industry in the U.S., and for getting me started in this career. (Incidentally, those of you who are nostalgia buffs may be interested in getting a copy of Jerry's article, "The Hard Story of the Soft Contact Lens", that appeared in last September's Chemtech (1988), a magazine published by the American Chemical Society. It tells all about his and Martin's involvement in the beginnings of the soft lens.)

Well, finally, what goes around, comes around. I recently noticed that B&L was going to reintroduce the silicone elastomer lens into the market. Sol Braff's Calcon Labs was for a time owned by Dow Corning, who first introduced the silicone lens, "the lens of the future" (and it may always be -- but that’s another story), in the mid 1970s, and who then sold its rights to B&L. Next time I'll tell a little of the history of the silicone lens.

Friday Q A Swollen Knees and Meniscus Tears

After Shari’s recent post about her swollen knee (see Yoga and Pain Management), a reader left this question for her in the comments section. We like to answer these questions on Fridays, just in case there are other readers out there who might be interested in the discussion. For all you new readers, feel free to ask questions about yoga as comments on any post, even  older posts. or to email me via the Contact Us page on the blog. We're keeping track of all questions and will answer them all eventually! —Nina

Q: Re: your swollen knee - can I use these poses for someone with a meniscus tear? I have been avoiding balasana, but am wondering whether cat/cow is okay as the weight is split between 4 points of the hands and knees. Would be grateful for any other useful pointers.

A: With a meniscal tear, there will range of motion loss, especially in flexion (bending the knee). Extension (straightening) can also sometimes have a slight loss of range of motion. That said, any pose that doesn't cause swelling afterward is okay. Pain may or may not be the limiting factor but swelling definitely is. As to specific poses like Balasana (Child’s pose), if you have pain, use a prop, like a block or a bolster, to limit the knee flexion. Cat-Cow pose is certainly a weight-bearing pose through the patella (kneecap), but that may or may not be a factor. You’ll have to try it and see what happens. Using padding under the knees would be helpful. Definitely avoid knee movements that involve rotation, as it will cause pain and swelling.

Friday Q A Hyperventilation and pH

Calla Lilies by Melina Meza
Two readers pointed out some inaccuracies in a post we re-ran in March 9/11 Anxiety and Yoga regarding pH changes that occur with hyperventilation, or, more specifically for this post, CO2 levels in the brain:

"I believe you are mixing up higher acid and higher pH. If CO2 or lactic acid is high, then the pH will be lower. More acidic is lower pH. And relaxation, which lowers the acid content, will raise the pH."

"I am so glad someone else noticed this contradiction with the CO2 levels and pH, as well. Yes, meditation, and especially deep breathing, will reduce excess CO2 in the system, thus making it more alkaline. People experiencing extreme anxiety tend to have more shallow breaths, which increases the CO2 concentration. This, in turn, increases the anxiety. It is a cycle that is remedied quite effectively with the practice of slow and deep breathing practices."

While we have since made appropriate corrections to our post (both the rerun and the original), I thought that today I’d address the issues that our readers raised.

Before I clarify the pH info from our 3/27/2014 post, I wanted to define what hyperventilation is. According the NIH website:

“Hyperventilation is rapid or deep breathing that can occur with anxiety or panic (I would add Pranayama, also). It is also called overbreathing, and may leave you feeling breathless.”

The bold is also my addition to remind everyone reading that you can hyperventilate by breathing too rapidly OR too deeply, or with a combination of both. In all scenarios, the person ends up blowing off too much CO2 via the lungs, thus lowering the amount of CO2 in the blood steam.

However, in my post, I was actually not talking about hyperventilation, but was looking at a study that said that when the brain gets more acidic (lower pH) due to higher concentrations of CO2 in the brain and lactic acid builds up, it could trigger panic attacks. The one change in wording I would make is the following sentence:

“So if an increase in pH in the brain could be a trigger for anxiety and panic attacks…”

To be more accurate to the study mentioned, this should read (and now does): “So if a decrease in pH in the brain…”

But I also want to clarify what happens in the bloodstream during hyperventilation: as CO2 levels decrease, it actually leads to the blood becoming more alkaline or the pH increasing. “Respiratory” alkalosis can develop as a result of a yoga practitioner hyperventilating while doing yoga, for instance. On the chemical level, hyperventilation is accompanied by too great a loss of carbon dioxide, CO2, from the blood stream and consequent decreases in two other substances, carbonic acid and hydrogen ion concentrations (for you closet chemists out there!)

There are certain situations in which hyperventilation is more likely to arise, such as in anxious situations, at higher altitude, or in some wind instrument players who play long sustained notes and therefore breathe out and in in an unusual pattern (tuba players are a good example). If you are hyperventilating, you may start to experience dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, dry mouth, numbness and tingling in the arms or around the mouth, shortness of breath, confusion and weakness, to name a few symptoms. And if you are yoga teacher and your student complains of any of those symptoms, this may indicate the student is hyperventilating. (These same symptoms may indicate something more serious, but you can address them as I suggest below while getting help if you deem it necessary.)

In my experience, if I identify someone I think might be hyperventilating, I ask them to sit comfortably and focus on slowing the breath if it is rapid, or even allowing the breath to return to a more normal depth if it is really deep and fast. The student’s symptoms often resolve quickly. One possibility of the effect of slowing the breath down is that you don’t blow off CO2 from the lungs so quickly, and you end up retaining more CO2 in the blood stream, gradually lowering the alkaline blood pH closer to normal. So try these techniques if you think you (or your student) may have been hyperventilating.

The physiology and biochemistry of all of this is somewhat complex and beyond the interest of many of our readers, but for those wanting to dive more deeply into it, Shelly Prosko, our physical therapist/yoga teacher contributor, recommends the book Applied Anatomy & Physiology of Yoga by Simon Borg-Olivier and Bianca Machliss.

Different Methods To Determine A Good Chiropractor

By Kimberly West

It is common for most people to experience back pains. If you are constantly working, there is a chance that it would become strenuous for your back and it could also become the cause of pressure. This is what prompts back pains. There are those types that you could easily recover from. And some others are having difficulties particularly since their back pains are recurring. That is when you might want to have it checked.

If you could feel that this is something that could be the cause for concern, then you need to choose the right options and the proper means for treatment. There are new things and methods being utilized. All you need to do is be aware of the options and treatments necessary. One good choice for your current needs is to go to a professional North Wilmington chiropractor for your treatment.

This could be a beneficial option. There is a need to determine what the current condition is first before you make a decision. And it is also necessary to think about the benefits that it can provide. It might be the best option, but it would be best to check with professionals for these needs. Your condition could easily be resolved by professionals.

But there might be a downside to these things. Others are actually very reluctant of using the method because it could be very dangerous. The method tampers with the current position of the spine. And when this is not done properly, it would put any person in danger. There are doubts that this can actually be helpful.

There are certain options particularly for the chiropractic establishments you can go for. Other individuals have decided to set their own standards so it would be easier for them. And others feel that it is best to make use of the right factors so that it would not be very difficult for them to choose and narrow options down.

They should be licensed. Any professional working in the medical field needs to undergo a specific test to guarantee that they could actually provide the best services. The license would show their clients that they were able to pass the necessary standards and their services can be trusted because it is highly legal.

Experience is a necessary thing to consider. If they are well experienced, they would not have difficulties with the service and they would also be efficient. Aside from the medical skills they have, they can easily accommodate patients and provide the needs for each one which can be a good thing.

Reviews can be good options particularly when you want to learn more about the establishment. There are specific information and features that you can see and read from these areas. This can be a good and accurate source. And with this, it is easier to know what to expect from their services because of this.

It is important to think about the services you are going to provide. Machines are also used and there are others who prefer to make use of hands. The effect of such things might be different so you need to be more aware of the options present and decide which one is your preference and what you want to go for.

How A Knox County Chiropractic Office Helps Alleviate Back Pain Naturally

By Matt Chaderia

Back pain is a leading cause of debilitation among men and women and is characterized by acute and chronic symptoms. Spinal damage and injuries can lead to adverse effects on physical function including limitations in regular movement. Knox County chiropractic care offers natural and safe methods that aim to address underlying sources of discomfort for the healthiest possible function.

Chiropractic is a naturally based approach that focuses on the health of the spine. The spinal column is connected to the nerves, tissues, and the muscles of the body that can become dysfunctional where injuries and misalignment are present. The practitioner will not advise on the use of prescription medication or surgery because these methods are harsh and may affect normal recovery.

The physical assessment of movement and structure can aid in detecting problems of the back. Mobility tests and X-rays may be advised to determine if spinal misalignment is impacting normal health. A misaligned spine can cause painful symptoms and restrictions in regular movement that results from nerve pressure and imbalance.

A professional approach to address the imbalance of spinal joints includes the application of firm thrusts to achieve stability. The aim of such intervention is to tend to the misalignment of structures and to restore the alignment of the vertebrae. Nerve compression and dysfunction can be alleviated with natural measures that best support the spine.

Chronic conditions and trauma to the lumbar region can contribute to pain and strain. Rehabilitation for back problems will involve exercises to strengthen the muscles and to best manage the limitations in mobility. Such measures can aid in protecting the delicate structures against lumbar problems and future trauma.

The chiropractor will require a complete physical assessment of function to determine the reasons for painful symptoms. Conditions involving spinal misalignment, poor muscle function, and chronic disorders can be alleviated with the correct management practices. The restricted range of motion can be alleviated with safe measures that aim to support healthy function.

Selecting A Bucks County Family Practice Doctor

By Essie Osborn

Anyone that is focused on the idea of trying to remain as healthy and well as possible throughout their lives is reliant on medical attention from a trained professional. Parents in particular are often focused on the need to make sure that a qualified doctor is utilized for their entire family in an attempt to consolidate their needs and actually remain healthy and well at all times. Consumers that are focused on this form of care should know what to consider when selecting a Bucks County family practice doctor.

A family practice doctor is trained in working with parents and children to make sure their preventative and immediate medical needs are met. Most parents are interested in this specifically trained physician when making sure they are able to consolidate their treatment needs to keep life simpler and healthier. The choices that parents make from the various professionals are often quite difficult when necessary.

Consumes in most cities that are focused on this kind of professional guidance have a vast assortment of providers to consider. Most people are not clear about all that is necessary when trying to make sure their treatment needs will be as proactively managed as possible. The right choice is able to be made when several factors are carefully focused on.

People are urged to carefully focus on any referrals they are offered from other parents. People that use a doctor for their medical needs are directly versed in their skills and abilities which can be useful to people that are trying to make a more informed decision. Concentrating on this information is incredibly helpful in being able to narrow down the options significantly.

An additional concern that people have is making sure any areas of specialty that are managed by the physician are fully understood. Doctors are often known to have a particular field of medicine that they are most versed in which can must be understood to ensure the entirety of any treatment needs will be productively managed. Professionals that are skilled in offering the most expansive forms of treatment are often the ones that generate the most attention.

Consumers are also focused on the chance to make sure the professional is convenient to utilize. Convenience factors are usually focused on by consumers that are trying to keep their medical based needs efficiently managed over time. Easily accessed facilities and flexible appointment times are helpful in avoiding major complications.

Prescription filling options should also be offered when making this selection. Having prescriptions filled is usually a challenge for people as it requires a trip to a pharmacy that is often time consuming and even expensive to manage. Doctors that provide the medications their patients need help avoid this added wellness step.

Cost is always a major concern of parents that are interested in this kind of doctor. People with medical coverage should be confident the doctor is within their network for full access to coverage benefits. Consumers without coverage are encouraged to find the lowest priced visits and most flexible payment options to keeping the budgets under control.

A Breakthrough Formula For Colon Cleansing Diet Is Here

By Jeremy Gutierrez

People offer colon cleansing diet tips to help those people who are suffering from problems such as fatigue and sluggishness from excess weight. If you've ever tried one of these diets and failed it's no surprise because these diets can be difficult to stay on.

There are a number of different commercial colon cleansing products that are available on the market today, but it's important to realize that what's going to work best on your colon is natural, healthy ingredients... so rather than just running out and grabbing the first thing you see off the shelves, you may want to consider using a homemade, natural colon cleansing diet.

The first thing you need to know about a colon cleansing diet is that you have many different options. There are herbal cleanses, fiber programs, diets and fasting and oxygen cleanses. So, you need to know what type of detox and colon cleansing diet you want to go on.

Remember that many of the homemade colon cleansing diet ideas that you find are put together by alternative health professionals and some are just made up by regular people like yourself who do not actually have any knowledge in the medical field. This is why you've got to be very careful with the homemade colon cleansing diet recipes that you use. You're most likely going to have to go through some trial and error before you stumble across one that works well for you.
Colon Cleansing Diet
There are tons of different ingredients that can be included in this sort of recipe, but a few that are almost considered as essential. Probiotics are very frequently found in colon cleansing recipes, and they work by helping to increase the natural occurrence of the good bacteria that live in your digestive system and help it to flourish.

What breaks my heart the most is the percentage of our children that fall into the range of being obese. I just ask that you keep that in mind as you take on this new venture because children will follow the examples set by the adults in their life and if more parents would live by example it would help our children tremendously.

Another very important colon cleansing diet tip is to begin a pre-diet routine by changing what you eat for a few days. Each of these programs will include instructions as to what you should be eating before you begin so that you can attain optimal results with your colon cleanse diet without negative side effects such as cramping and discomfort.

You should always do what's right for your body, though and don't pick a colon cleanse diet which is too harsh or you could become very sick from the very same toxins which you are trying to rid yourself of.

Fasting can be done for several days. It's important to listen to your body and realize when it is time to stop.

Another colon cleansing diet tip which is very often recommended is to cut out all the dairy products from your diet. You should also consider eliminating meats and breads from the diet as well, since they can cause your body to form mucus in the system.

Beware of "kids" juices that have no fiber at all. Remember to read the labels before buying any juice for your natural colon cleansing diet.

The other method is to adhere to a colon cleanse diet and take a daily colon cleanse supplement that is made from all natural ingredients. It's possible to clean your colon with diet alone but for most it is best to do it in conjunction with a colon cleansing supplement. Of course you need you must be cautious when purchasing such supplements because the market is flooded with different brands and only a small percentage of those are any good.

Friday Q A Chair Yoga

Q: My daughter just came from a retreat with Dr. Bell in Montana and suggested I contact you regarding some chair poses. I'm 77 years old and am in good physical health, but have never been involved with yoga.  Can you point me in a direction if indeed you do have chair poses as included somewhere on your website?

A:  Thank you for your question. Turns out we have nine different posts listed in our table of contents on this topic.  Click here to see a short sequence on our site. As with any yoga sequence, you may want to do easier versions of some of the poses, for instance, the seated backbend and forward bend pictured might be too deep for a new practitioner to do safely, so only take yourself part way in those directions.  Also, know that in addition to doing poses seated on the chair, you can also use a chair for support while you are standing. Find a chair that has a back that is tall enough so you can place your hand on it while you stand behind it. This will allow you to explore some of the standing poses by using your hands on the back of the chair to help you with your balance. If you get stronger and more confident in some of these poses, you can also wean yourself off the chair as a support.

You might also consider getting a book on chair yoga or a book that includes chair yoga practices. Although there are many such books on the market, here is a short list of books that I have in my own library and can recommend:
  1. Yoga For Osteoporosis by Loren Fishman, MD and Ellen Saltonstall
  2. The Healing Path of Yoga by Nischala Joy Devi
  3. Recovery Yoga by Sam Dworkis
Some of the chair poses you will find in these books would be great for someone just starting out with yoga; others might be too advanced.  Usually your common sense will tell you which ones to avoid.  I am sharing a picture I took of the Sun Salutation in a chair from The Healing Path of Yoga as an example of how you might move through a series of shapes with the support of your chair.
In addition to books, there are a lot of free yoga videos online at youtube.com. But I recommend you watch the videos from start to finish without doing the practice to make sure it all looks safe and doable for you at this point in time. Sometimes the quality of those freebies is not so great, so look at a few before deciding which one to practice with.

Finally, make sure you also look around your community for a chair yoga class. They are becoming more and more common, especially at the YMCA and senior centers or places that cater to an older clientele. And learning in person from a teacher is one of the best ways to get started with your practice.

The nice thing about chair yoga is you can get away with doing it with out too many props. All you really need is a sturdy folding metal chair. Other chairs without arms can work nicely, too, as long as they are sturdy. I am sure in some books you will come across poses that employ other props, like firm wool or cotton blankets, yoga blocks or belts.  And these things can be helpful, but if the thought of getting all that extra stuff is daunting and gets in the way of you trying some yoga in a chair, just forget about them for now, and explore what you and your chair can do, just the two of you. One other consideration: it is nice to have your chair not sliding around on the floor, so get one with those plastic sticky caps on the bottom of the legs, or have the chair in a carpeted room where the legs will dig into the carpet as you move on the chair, or if you have a yoga sticky mat, place the chair on your yoga mat.

And no matter where you end up getting your chair yoga information from, keep in mind that the basic skills of mindfulness and attention to your breath and your body will need to be applied to the work you do in the chair. If you have any present difficulties with arthritis or osteoporosis, two extremely common issues in those over 65, consider reading our posts on those topics. Then, as you prepare to do some yoga, you can be mindful of which movements to be more careful with.

Have fun and let me know how your yoga practice is coming along!

What To Look For In A Reliable Chiropractor Springfield VA

By Kenya England

It is important for you to do some serious research in order to benefit from worthwhile chiropractic treatment. While chiropractors could all be qualified, not all of them could offer services that match your needs. Remember that the chiropractic profession is tangled with an array of philosophies, practices and techniques. It takes research and a lot of patience to find a professional whose practices are an ideal match for your individual needs. During the hunt for a reliable chiropractor Springfield VA is an excellent area to base initial research.

Your research should be focused on finding qualified, proficient, experienced and well reputed professionals. Once you have a reasonable list of experts, schedule for consultation with them. The idea is to interview them with the aim of understanding the kind of chiropractic care they could offer you. By knowing the fine details of a service, you could easily tell whether the treatment approaches are suitable or questionable.

A fine way to find reliable experts within your area is by seeking recommendations. Your primary care physician could have good understanding of your condition and may even know of a good chiropractor you could contact. You may also seek the views of people within your circles, especially those that have sought after chiropractic treatment first-hand.

The importance of doing some homework before getting in touch with recommended specialists must not be underestimated. There are instances where the finest specialist for a friend would not be a good one for you. In this respect, you need to do a bit of digging around of your own before you decide whether or not to consider the expertise of a recommended expert.

Chiropractic treatment is often physical. In this regards, finding a professional you can relate with comfortably will be of paramount importance. Consider not just the educational qualifications and the respect an expert commands, but also his or her attitude and personality. If there is good chemistry between you, then you would feel more at ease when attending your sessions.

In order for you to be comfortable, you need to consider the personality of a potential chiropractor, his or her professionalism levels and also the condition of a clinic. During research, you must not ignore your preferences. Get to know where and when treatment sessions would take place. In addition find out whether you would get treatment express or whether you have to queue. The location of a clinic is another vital factor that must also be considered.

Chiropractic treatment can assist immensely in treating or managing back pain issues. If a particular treatment plan is effective, then you should start experiencing some positive changes at least after four weeks. There is always a need for one to raise an alarm if nothing positive seems to be happening even after weeks. This would not necessarily mean that you have to change chiropractors; it may mean that the expert needs to change approaches.

The cost of treatment is another aspect that you cannot afford to overlook. The severity of your issue and also the principles of an expert would highly determine the number of sessions you need to attend every week. Aim your research at finding worthwhile services that are within your financial means.

Daydreaming A Vacation for Your Brain Rerun

by Nina
by Melina Meza
I get some of my best ideas when I’m sweeping the kitchen floor, weeding the garden, waking up in the morning, and practicing yoga. Sometimes I won’t even realize that I’ve been mulling over a problem in the back of my mind when, like a gas bubble in the La Brea Tar Pits, an idea suddenly burbles up into my conscious mind.

Which reminds me—I recently saw Brad’s report cards from grammar school, and this super accomplished scientist, who has a Ph.D. in biochemistry from MIT, didn’t do very well during his early years. In fact he spent so much time daydreaming during one class that his teachers wrote, “Brad lives in another world.” At least in his case, we know that not paying attention didn’t seem to hurt his intellectual development one bit.

Which reminds me: I heard Daniel Levintin, a neuroscientist and author of The Organized Mind, being interviewed on KQED radio (listen here) the other night and he said that daydreaming was a “reset button” for the mind that is overwhelmed with information, and that this state of mind was the mental state in which we’re most creative. So maybe the reason I get my best ideas when I’m doing some simple tasks (I’ll get to yoga in a minute), is that I’m getting a chance to daydream. In his NY Times article Hit the Reset Button in Your Brain, Levintin describes daydreaming:

“This brain state, marked by the flow of connections among disparate ideas and thoughts, is responsible for our moments of greatest creativity and insight, when we’re able to solve problems that previously seemed unsolvable. You might be going for a walk or grocery shopping or doing something that doesn’t require sustained attention and suddenly — boom — the answer to a problem that had been vexing you suddenly appears. This is the mind-wandering mode, making connections among things that we didn’t previously see as connected.”

He says that our brains have two dominant modes of attention: the task-positive network and the task-negative network. The task-positive network is active when you’re “actively engaged in a task, focused on it, and undistracted.” The task-negative network is active when your mind is “wandering” or daydreaming. Together, he says, “these two networks operate like a seesaw in the brain—when one is active, the other is not.” To fully absorb the information we’ve been exposed to, we need to spend some time in both modes. (This sounds very similar to the two modes of the autonomic nervous system: Fight or Flight and Rest and Digest, don’t you think?)

We don’t get much time for daydreaming these days, what with all the multitasking we’re doing throughout the day and all the information we’re constantly being asked to absorb. In his interview, Levintin pointed out that multitasking isn’t really multitasking; it’s just switching very frequently and quickly between one task and another. That’s kind of overwhelming in and of itself. He also wrote, “According to a 2011 study, on a typical day, we take in the equivalent of about 174 newspapers’ worth of information, five times as much as we did in 1986.” So it makes sense that our brains, much like our nervous systems, would need a rest once in while.

Which reminds me: when I first starting practicing yoga in Boston and then later in Cambridge, England, my teachers always taught us a guided Savasana at the end of class. It was only when I moved to the West Coast of the US that I had teachers who told me to lie down in Savasana and then just quit talking and left me to it. That always puzzled me. Weren’t we supposed to have a focus for our minds as we lay there to guide us into a state of relaxation? Why were the teachers just leaving us to “rest” on our own? After all, just this week, I republished a post about Savasana in which I said that one of the things that made Savasana a pose was having a focus for your mind, and not just lying there spacing out. Having the focus for your mind is certainly what’s needed to invoke the Relaxation Response to put you in Rest and Digest mode. But what if your nervous system is in fine shape but your poor brain needs a bit of a vacation? Maybe lying in Savanasa and daydreaming for about 10 minutes could be just what you need? Were my West Coast yoga teachers on to something?

As for my own daydreaming while I do yoga, it’s probably happening while I’m doing restorative poses and long supported inverted poses, because sometimes I just relax physically without a specific mental focus. Oh, okay, sometimes my mind wanders a bit when I’m doing more active poses as well, especially ones I’ve been practicing at home for many years, even though I do try to keep my mind focused on my physical sensations. But until I heard Levintin talking about daydreaming, I had no idea that my wandering mind during my yoga practice was actually providing me with some important benefits!

How about you? Does your brain ever feel overwhelmed by your work? Or what you’re learning in school? Or all the information that you’re bombarded with on a daily basis? If so, consider adding some daydreaming to your yoga practice. You could do it in any form of Savasana (see Savasana (Corpse Pose) Variations). Or, you could also do it while you’re practicing restorative yoga poses (see Restorative Yoga: An Introduction and Mini Restorative Practice), as these poses relax you physically while your mind is free to wander.

Which reminds me: Ram cautions that not all daydreaming is productive or helpful, and he recommends “controlled daydreaming.” That sounds like an oxymoron to me, but I assume he means that if you notice your mind drifting into violent or aggressive fantasies, or negative dramas of any sort, you could gently move your mind away from those thoughts and onto something less stressful.

Why A Saundra Messinger Piece Is A Wardrobe Must Have

By Elizabeth Burns

Women and jewelry has always been something that has gone hand in hand. Back then women owned jewelry mostly because it was given to them, more often than not, by men. This was to show wealth and status, among other things. In the world we live in now, women do not own them just because it is given by a rich admirer. They buy it to treat themselves.

Putting on accessories, while essentially for aesthetic, can say volumes about the wearer. This is why picking the right pieces the match with your wardrobe is vital. For the creative, funky and cool woman who does not skimp on artistic elegance, a Saundra Messinger piece is a must. Each accessory is hand made, which makes them precious. No price can be paid for handiwork close to any artists heart.

The irregular structure of each piece gives it a peculiar beauty. The shine and shimmer that the necklaces, bracelets and rings have reminds one of the beauty that nature holds. The theme of her whole line is given away with how the pieces are named. Names range from Raindrops and Bark to Tribal. An impression of uniqueness and individualism exudes from anyone who wears a Messinger.

Her main inspiration on the work she has done comes from the Mississippi and the Hudson river. Most earlier pieces somewhat resemble the flow of muddy river water when they crash into rocks and the irregularly smooth texture of stones. This is what makes a Messinger a unique piece.

Her work is popular for their trademark non symmetrical style. With personalities and fashion icons such as Vogue declaring her work as cutting edge, it is no wonder that her pieces are sought after. Hers is the handiwork of an artist that has melded the fluidity of water into something so seemingly solid as silver and gold.

The accessories have a pop of shimmer in every small diamond that is quietly placed in the jewelry. It is like a secret only the wearer knows about. The matte finish caps off the rough elegance of its composition. The earrings are usually in bezel and tiny structures perfect for the whole subtle glimmer of silver aesthetic that every simple, yet unique woman likes.

A Messinger looks great on anyone. They can be perfect for a wardrobe with mostly geometrical cuts like blazers, suits, and slacks. The accessories provide an irregularity that balances out the outfits minimalist aesthetic. The jewelry also looks divine on a bohemian chic wardrobe since the pieces are themed after nature.

The brand can be easily contacted with its active social media presence. Updates on the latest fall collection have been done on their website. Since the jewelry are handmade, they take about three weeks to make. But they also offer ready to ship pieces, if you cannot wait to get your hands on one already. They also do tours and can be found in jewelry shops across the country.

Treat yourself or a loved one with unusually beautiful necklace or earrings. Not only are these things a great investment, they can also be inherited by the other women of every generation. A Messinger is always charming that even men will not have a hard time choosing which one to get their beloved.

OCD A to Z D is for Doubt

OCD is sometimes known as the "Doubting Disease." This has been a key element in my struggle with OCD, the gnawing nature of doubt. Fred Penzel, OCD therapist, sums it up well:

OCD can make a sufferer doubt even the most basic things about themselves, others, or the world they live in. I have seen patients doubt their sexuality, their sanity, their perceptions, whether or not they are responsible for the safety of total strangers, the likelihood that that they will become murderers, etc. I have even seen patients have doubts about whether they were actually alive or not. Doubt is one of OCD's more maddening qualities. . . It is a doubt that cannot be quenched. It is doubt raised to the highest power. . . Even when an answer is found, it may only stick for several minutes, only to slip away as if it was never there. Only when sufferers recognize the futility of trying to resolve this doubt, can they begin to make progress.
I went with my husband to Easter church service. I don't usually go to church. My OCD doubting took a heavy toll on my spirit. I am at the point where I can go every once in awhile, and not have it cascade into intense doubt. One of the scripture passages was from the Gospel of John. You may have heard the expression "doubting Thomas" about the disciple who refused to believe Jesus had risen from the dead until he saw and touched the wounds himself. John 20:24-29

Listening to this passage, I wondered if Thomas' doubt was quenched by touching the nailmarks, or if the doubt kept returning, haunting him with questions about whether he actually felt his hand go into wound, or if he did trust that experience but agonized over whether his belief actually "counted" since he had to have physical proof first.
